Yeah, seen a few. The 70's generator, by Onan, was as described a basic 
12V genset vertically mounted in a sealed compartment on the roadside. I 
have yet to see a curbside mount but that doesn't mean they aren't out 
there.
The mid 90's Onan Microlite installation was indeed in the roadside 
usually sealed in the space under one of the dinette seats. An while 
that Microlite would run some AC's it wouldn't run the one Airstream 
uses. So it lasted for a couple of years and then dropped off the option 
list.
