Fritz,
I test my LP detector about twice a year.  I just take a
butane lighter and blow out the flame while holding
the trigger down and then hold it very near the detector.
Be patient, it takes a few minutes for the gas to find its
way up inside the detector.  If it doesn't start chirping
in about 5 minutes you may have a problem.  Oh, by
the way they may chirp now and then in hot humid
weather.  This is normal but annoying.  Just push
the button to silence it.  B^)
