[A/S] Parking/living off the land?!?

Can someone point me in the direction where I might find information
regarding legal rights of land use for parking/living in an travel
trailer, for both recreational and primary residence?  Specifically I
am interested in Southern California, where i currently reside, but I
would also like to compare it to other information, like Texas, where
I'm from.

To clarify, I am asking about land that you own.  Land both in
un-incorporated areas of a County and in city limits.
