As a retired cabinetmaker, I can tell you that a spring loaded axle is often
used in a tambour door application such as an "appliance garage" which
typically uses a vertical operating tambour door (horizontal slats).  The
spring is a means of counterbalancing the weight of the tambour, making it
easier to raise, and also helping it to stay in the open (upper) position.

The moulded track (and trim) Airstream used in subsequent years had a
"notch" to keep the tambour in the up position.

With the spring loaded axle system, the tambour tends to operate a little
smoother.  I think Airstream made the value judgement that the marginally
better operation was not worth the weight and complexity.  Obviously, this
is not a significant parameter in a residential kitchen.
