As noted by others switching over from shore power to
generator vice versa is risky business.  I worked for
a business that had an automatic transfer switch that
could take us from generator to electric utility and
back.  The first time we went from generator back to
utility, we damaged a lot of electronic equipment. 
The analysis was that the generator cycles did not
match the electrical utility.  We had to install
another component that would adjust the running speed
of the generator that would make sure that the cycles
provided by the generator were at the same level as
what the utility was providing.  

In something as low tech as a gasoline generator doing
a live transfer of power from a generator to utility
or vice versa can cause damage to the running
electrical device.
