I watch airstreams on eBay nearly daily looking for basket case hulls and
parts that I need to fix my '58 Overlander.

At any one time there are probably 10-15 Airstreams for auction that sell
for between about 1500 and 6-7000.  They mostly are about 20-35 years old,
in good shape, with most or all of the major appliances working, and with
some or few routine maintenance items needed.

For the price of a dinky new popup that doesn't have much of anything
worthwhile for options you can own an older Airstream that will have a full
kitchen, bathroom and shower, a decent bed, a place to sit and watch TV/play
cards, AND most of all HEAT and A/C.

And, short of bashing the thing into a wall or getting run over by a semi
they are extremely sturdy and don't need waxing or constant cleaning like
plastic/fiberglass/canvas.

If you are really willing and able to remodel or gut your trailer for
exactly what your needs are, there are even the occasional extreme "basket
cases".  My trailer needs 2 window frames, a fiberglass skylight, and a new
seal job on the fridge.  That would be the bare essentials to have my
trailer ready to go.  My wife wouldn't get in it, but it would do if the
house burned down.  I paid $200 for my 26 footer at a yardsale.  I figure
with about 9-12 months of most weekends and about 2-2500 I will have a
complete modern remodel with every system rebuild and all appliances
repaired/replaced and be able to boondock for 7-10 days no problem.  And, my
wife would be willing to go drag it out for 2-5 days, along with our two
dogs, and not be necessarily looking for a place to clean up or sleep in a
real bed.
