I have towed my original Bambi for about 17 years with a car.  
At first I had a Buick Regal.  When it had 134,000 no problem 
miles my favorite tranny man said I should have the tranny worked.  
Thought it a good time to update.  Sold the Buick for nearly 
what I gave for it.  Purchased a 1993 Crown Victoria in 1994.  
It now has 165,000 and no problems.

!. Have your transmission serviced before and maybe after every 
long trip or at least once a year.  My tranny man said mine 
should last forever the way it is cared for.

2.  Be sure you have a good tranny cooler.

3.  Don't hesitate to shift down.  Don't wait for the automatic 
to do it.  Going up a hill, when you pull down to 45, shift it 
down.  When down to 30 shift it into low.  You don't need to be 
the first rig up the hill. Also use the same technique.  If you 
would need 2nd to go up be sure to use it going down.  Same with 
low.  Saves your brakes and gives you more safety.

4.  Speed is the biggest threat to pulling a trailer.  What's your 
hurry.  You got it to see the country, didn't you?

5. Be sure your trailer had a good line up.
