         That's probably correct; seems to me that the chains actually 
cross fairly far back towards the trailer.  Besides, the Hensley springbars 
would, on my trailer, hit the pavement first...ooch!
         I doubt the authorities would accept that excuse in states where 
crossing chains is mandated; they'd insist they be crossed anyhow.  OTOH, 
I've never actually seen the  regulations requiring crossed chains - just 
word of mouth...maybe just an old...er...husband's tale? <g>
