popping may come from too little fuel to too much unburned fuel suddenly 
igniting.  with no place to expand all the fuel ignites all at once causing the 
sound of ignition in the burn tube I would think

by any chance, do you have any water leaking from the pressure relief valve 
onto the sliding part of the burn tube?  dripping water would put out the flame 
only to be reignited again which would also cause the popping sound.  if you 
have any water leaking from the pressure valve it needs to be replaced as you 
can not work on them.  cost is about $20.00
