The limiting factor is not the current available to the inverter, it is the
inverter itself.  If the genset was at high altitudes where the engine
produces less output, then theoretically, providing the inverter with a
second source of DC would at least ensure full rated output, but no more.  

I am not sure if the alternator on the EU series outputs 12V or something
higher.  There is nothing inherent about alternator design that limits them
to 12V output, that is simply a function of the voltage regulation circuit
on the alternator (the power to your house is created by an alternator).  If
you look at the 12V DC output on the EU series, you will find that it is
pretty small (8amp on the EU2000 or 96watts) while the main 120V output is
16.7amps or 2000watts).  This tells me that the alternator is not directly
connected to the 12V outputs on the unit and the internal alternator voltage
to the inverter may well be higher than 12V.  Just as the inverter creates
the 120V pure sine wave alternating current output, an additional circuit
could convert the alternator output to 12VDC at the lower current spec.
