If the scratches go through the coating to the aluminum surface, it is 
possible that there will be a coating peal that will propagate from the scratch.  
Mine was out of warranty when I noticed the first scratches.  I made repairs to 
them with a clear coat "paint" that I purchased at Auto Zone or Pep Boys.  My 
thinking was that this would help protect the aluminum from oxidizing and 
"poping" the coating.
