Re: [A/S] Faulty Tow Vehicle Recommendation (was: Older tow vehicles

I have to throw my comments in also. I towed a 28ft.
SOB with an Astro van. Quite honestly the Astro was a
special model with a premium gas V6 and a 4.10 rear
axle. Rated to pull 6,000 lbs. The trailer was 4,800
lbs dry. Did it pull it yes! Did I have sway
problems, no. Was I comfortable no!

There is something about mass and wheelbase that make
the difference both in safety and driver comfort.
Trucks and windy days made life miserable. Not in the
sway department but in both vehicles moving together.
That trailer was a giant sail and without the mass
that a larger tow vehicle supplies driving was a case
of being pushed around the highway. I dumped the
Astro and picked up a full sized Chevy van. Only
picked up 500 lbs. more towing capacity but the
difference was night and day.

I can't support the use of small vehicles towing any
type of large trailer. Yes you may be able to do it
but you are pushing the envelope.
