I too have a 70's International and have puzzled over how to clean the
refrigerator chimney. I tried putting short length of 1/2 chain on a cord
down the chimney to wiggle around, but, as you say, had a hard time getting
it in the chimney itself. I found I needed a 6' ladder to get high enough up
that I could let gravity pull the chain down the chimney. I've had the local
RV place clean the chimney but I have no idea how they did it.

Another thing I've found about the propane fired fridge, is to make sure the
place where the flame burns (not sure what to call that) is kept clean.
Every time I light it, I take a toothbrush and gently remove any soot build
up. Seems to make the flame burn more blue and less yellow, which is what
you want.
I never have been able to get my 30 year old fridge to work on electric and
just use the propane.
