If you use a good filter (i.e. not FRAM) then changing every 5,000 miles is 
a safe bet.  Many go 7,500 miles and do well.  My son uses Mobil One and 
changes every 5,000.  I use Amsoil with the bypass filter system, go 5,000, 
change full flow filter, go another 5,000 and change both full flow and 
bypass filters.  I recently went to the larger BE100 bypass filter and 
larger Amsoil SDF26 full flow filters and increased mileage changes to 
6,000, change full flow, go 6,000 and change both.  I'm not sure if I will 
continue with the larger filters or not, just experimenting.  They say they 
are good for 12,500 and 12,500 and that is what I use to do with my '92 
Chevy Z71.  The engine was running fine at 144,000 when my son rolled it 
missing a deer.  Can you say totalled?
