Pete,
Original steps are a challenge as well. Airstreams have steel outriggers
that attach to the frame at one end and support the floor & walls at the
other end. My trailer had an aftermarket step fudged on that was supported
by the floor, however as the outriggers had rusted off, the floor was taking
all of the load. This lead to other problems with the side wall floor
connections. Don't add a floor hung replacement step unless you still have
outriggers supporting the floor. I ended up purchasing another scrap
Airstream  trailer and cut the outriggers off, rebuilt the step then welded
the whole thing back on my trailer. This solidified the floor and wall along
with bringing the step back to original. It works great now.
