Stand alone Tivo, the ones w/o direct TV, need a phone line to get their
programming info.

Direct Tivo, get all their programming (TV guide) off the satellite feed.
They do not need a phone line to keep working.  The phone line is only used
for software updates.  You will however get a nag screen complaining about
needing to hookup the phone line.  If you order a lot of pay per view
without a phone line it will stop you after it cannot call Tivo.  But you
can continue to order your pay per views on their website.
