My TiVo worked with the round dish, but High definition and local 
channels use the oval dish. At least that is the way it works, in 
the Dayton, Ohio area. I have Direct. I have been told that for TiVo 
to work, you have to be connected to a phone line. I was told that 
they send signals down every so often and if they don't get a 
response, they shut you off. Richard in Southwest
