Well, I guess it depends on where you are towing and where 
you are parking. The parking and unparking would be the 
important part, since you can't tow in 4WD over about 45 and 
it uses more gas.

If I am backing my '29 Ambassador up hill into a parking 
place, I use 4WD.

If I am going to my parking spot at the International in 
Lansing, I use 4WD because of the sopping wet field. And 
Ditto going out, and then I towed  several other people out 
of the mud.

If I am on a dirt road and it rains a lot, I use 4WD.

When I drive my trailer up to my friend's house in MT on top 
of a butte, I use 4WD.

and best of all:

When my friend's AS classic motor home got stuck in a muddy 
field, I put my big black truck in 4WD and pulled him out. 
Ta Daa.

And then there's always my parent's driveway in MA that 
turns into a luge run for the winter.

Do you have to have it ? No, but I wouldn't leave home 
without it.
