Chas -
Just in case it helps - my guess is that either year Ford would do
magnificently for your Yellowstone trip, and all subsequent ones.
I've been doing a little looking myself, and drove both years
multiple times at multiple Ford dealers to check out the new
suspension (4 x 4 only). There's a night and day difference in the
highway ride with the new coil spring front suspension on the 2005 4
x 4. It also gives a considerably tighter turning circle. The new
trailer brake controller, upfitter switches, and other goodies also
are attractive. But the main suggestion is to drive every vehicle
you're considering purchasing, with your spouse along, and pay
particular attention to the ride. Only you two can decide whether the
improvement is worth the extra it'll cost over a 2004. If you're
looking at 2WD, expect very little difference between the two years.
