Oil Cost for my Diesel
Hi Matt,
I have the same Amsoil setup on my truck. That is how my "oil cost" got up
to the $500 mark for the first 12,000 miles. I was told ( by my dealer,
which was all in favor of the switch to Amsoil) to run the conventional oil
for the first 3000 miles to be sure the rings were seated properly, then
change to Amsoil 2000 Heavy Duty Diesel Synthetic Oil. I put the Amsoil Dual
Filter Kit (along with a mounting bracket from a guy in Texas that used
existing holes in the frame and is "hell for stout") when I had about 800
miles and put in new conventional oil. I ran that oil until I had 3000 miles
on it, then put in new filters and the Amsoil 5W-30 HD Diesel oil. I ran
that for about 8000 miles. Bought an oil sampling kit, and sent off a sample
for analysis. The sample came back "Clean" "not recommended for changing by
the independent lab> I then changed out the Full Flow filter at about the
12,000 mile mark along with the 2 quarts of oil for the new filter. I also
have a case of oil setting in the garage for the next oil change, and two
sets of filters for the future. The wallet is over $500 lighter, but should
get better on a "per mile" basis as time moves on. BTW - The "Geriatric
bones - and other things" are getting worse on a "per mile" basis in my case
also.
