John,
I would HIGHLY suggest that you consider, Davis Mountain State Park.  It is
located a few miles from Ft Davis and has full hookups.  It is also about 15
miles from McDonald Observatory which houses 3 of the larger telescopes in
the world (daily tours).  The state park also has a resort at the end of the
canyon with a restaurant.  We have stayed at the park many times and most
recently last May.  Planning a return trip this March.  As stated, the
weather can be crisp in the fall/winter/spring, especially in the evenings.
