My 2002 GMC Duramax/Allison does not have the above stated 6-8 MPG 
disadvantage with or without towing.  

Even the newer diesels are noiser than a gas engine, but it is not 
objectionable inside the cab (IMHO).  It is noisy at a drive in window.  

The earlier suggestion on the list about taking a test drive would be a good 
way to access the noise level for yourself.
