John,
I had a 1992 1500 Suburban with a 350 engine.  It was underpowered in any type 
of hill and I ruined a transmission towing.  I sold it and bought a 1999 2500 
Suburban with a 454 engine.  It pulls the A/S with no problems.  The gas 
milage towing the trailer is the same between both vehicles...about 10 MPG or 
so.  I could get 16 MPG in the 1500 on the road with no trailer and I get 11 
or so in the 2500 on the road with no trailer.  I tow a 1978 28 foot 
Ambassador.
