Is the mounting plate a part of the axle?  If it is,
why would that be preferable to using the fore and aft
jack points.

I'm in no way an expert on the subject, but I do know
that the axles are hollow core.  This is my cause for
concern.  I don't want to put weight on the axle that
would cause it to bend.  I think this is why AS marks
the frame where you may raise the tires for changing.
