I use a Suburban 4X4 to tow our 29 foot Ambassador and it does great.
I also have a Chevy K1500 sortbed that I use once in a while. It does ok but the ride is 
rough with the short wheelbase.
The van you mention with the 138 wheelbase will be fine.
We just returned from our trip to North Georgia and there were several campers at the 
"Top of Georgia" airstream park who use vans. They seem to like them just fine.
Personnally I prefer 4X4 for traction in the winter when we go to the mountains.
