Minor point: Tighten spindle nut while turning the wheel.  The purpose of
this exercise is to seat the bearings.

It does not sound to me like you have too much slop.  I understand your
angst, but short of replacing the wheel bearings (which may or may not make
a difference), there is nothing you can do - you are at the mercy of where
the cotter pin holes in the nut are.  You certainly do not want too much
preload, or your bearings will get hot & fail early.
