[A/S] gps in a suburban

I have the computer, street atlas 2004, and the earthmate antenna. I need to 
know how to manage the laptop being on while guiding me down the highway. 
Carol is geographically challenged, and we have seen lots of places not planned 
on. Very interesting places among them. I'm a former Coastie and anal about 
position, having spent many tense hours in shallow water.
The Jotto desk looks perfect, but I would rather spend the $300 plus on 
gasoline. I'm hoping for an inexpensive, safe way. Something I could build myself. 
Sweat equity kind of guy.
I'm envious of the motorhome crowd for their acre of dashboard, but don't 
want to motorhome, love being trailer tramps.
