It sounds like replacing the plastic panel every few years is a regular ritual, regardless of how you do it. With that in mind, I will probably replace the entire lid with a solid aluminum one, or spend the $$$ and install a Fantastic Fan, complete with MaxAir cover, and a thin fluorescent light inside.
