         Well, gee, I have a smaller engine - 7.4 L, and a 4.10:1 rear-axle 
ratio, and I don't reliably get 9.2 mpg; I'd consider that an improvement 
(I use 8 mpg for estimating);  10.5 mpg would put me on cloud nine.  We do 
get about 14 mpg solo (we, too, only use the truck solo when traveling on 
caravans or from a campground, or in an emergency at home).  So, with your 
8.1 L, you're doing pretty good by my standards.
