Dual Battery Question

I have a 1990 Excella 1000 that has dual batteries. I
am wondering if I must use both batteries or if a
single battery will work? Both of the batteries were
in the trailer when I bought it and they are both
pretty much useless at this point. Since I seldom go
without shore power I don't see the need to have two
batteries.

The guy at the RV dealer said both batteries are
necessary for the system to operate properly. Is this
the case or can I get by with a single?
