This is a job that I need to do as well.

You pretty much quoted the directions in the service manual.  The 
only thing I can add is that the job is supposedly easier to do with 
a brake adjusting tool or bent screwdriver.

The manual says that once the wheel is locked, back off the adjuster 
8 notches.

Something that I planned to do was write down how many notches I had 
to go before each wheel was locked up, just to see how out of sync 
they were from each other.
