When ever you ground directly to the battery negative terminal you should
always fuse that lead in addtion to the positive lead.

A situation could occur if you loose your main vehicle ground cable, or it
becomes corroded, starting current or other vehicle current will try to be
supplied through your direct ground connection and it could easily start a
fire or just burn out your device, ie your break controller.
