If you are going to replace the pigtail, shop at a heavy truck parts 
store for the wireing.  Unless you can get a ready made complete 
fabricated unit, the wiring which can be obtained at a big truck 
place is far superior to that available at an RV store.  The stuff 
is soft and pliable like you would not believe.  Another thing, if 
you go this route, you might wish to find a metal trailer end box to 
replace the old sun rotted plastic one on your trailer.  You can get 
one from heavy truck parts stores that has pin connectors in it, so 
you can totally remove your umbilical cord and take it inside to 
work on it if it needs it.  I did this when I bought my '76 31' and 
have never been more pleased at the finished product.  A bit of heat 
shrink in size large and I had a unit that could have been 
manufactured by Airstream themselves, if they had had the right 
parts.  Total cost was about fifty bucks, and that was up here in 
Canada, so down there should be thirty five or less.  The only thing 
I could not get at the Freightliner Parts department was the seven 
blade plug that goes into the truck receptacle.  They were out.  I 
found one at our infamous Canadian Tire Store, and was off the the 
races.
