Don,

When you go shopping for a new trailer connector be sure to get the wiring 
diagram that comes with it. Your '76 uses a different wiring layout. Three 
wires need to be shifted, black, blue and yellow.
Black is backup, blue is charge and yellow is brake on the old setup. One 
the new black is charge line, blue is brake and yellow is backup. Just 
compare your service manual layout to the new one when you put the new plug on.
