I don't think that solar panels, at least an affordable array, would run 
things like A/C, microwaves, or hair dryers.

Another gen question is neighbors.

We dry camp almost exclusively and have a Honda 3000 gen. This 
effectively covers all needs. Our last trip was to Norco, CA :-)
for a week and the temps ranged from 104 to 107 during the day and was 
in the 50s at night (thank heavens). We just used
the gen for A/C. Didn't even need to charge the batteries.

I don't believe we are "running out of oil" at least within my life 
time. When we start to, it will just raise the price of gas and there
will be bigger problems than generators.
