RE: [A/S] waterfilters, and the Everpure

The Everpure is by far the best of the activated charcoal water filters.

The internal construction is such that it doesn't clog prematurely (before
the charcoal adsorption capacity is used up) like most other charcoal
filters which are simply a container of activated charcoal granules. Also,
it does not tend to develop open passages which could allow unfiltered water
through.  When the flow drops significantly, the filter is used up and is in
real need of replacement.

However, to get maximum health benefits from the Everpure, you must first
"super chlorinate" the input (fresh water tank) water source by adding
sufficient sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach ie Clorox).  This kills all
the bacteria but leaves undrinkable water. However, when this chemically
treated water is run through the charcoal, the chlorine (and other disolved
gases which impart a foul taste) and all the dead bacteria etc. are filtered
out leaving clean, healthy and good tasting drinking water.

Just using the filter alone will improve the taste but not eliminate the
bacteria and other nasty organisms which could get into the water supply.
Also, if the water has a lot of bacteria, etc. the filter could provide a
breeding ground (by collecting it on the input side of the filter) if the
bacteria is not first killed by the bleach.
