Hello Betty, Is your radio and eight track in the wall by the sofa 
or in the overhead compartment. In the 76 I had,the unit was in the 
wall in a swing down door. With all the room there, my son cut an 
opening in the door and installed a complete stereo out of a car, I 
don't remember what kind , but it was complete with a cassette, cd 
and am/fm.and there was room for an after market equalizer. Behind 
the cabinet on the floor then he installed a 100 watt amplifier. 
That is to the extreme end of things, but there is room to do about 
anything there. But I would say in either application , whether it 
be in the wall or the overhead, you should be able to just replace 
the old unit with an upgraded am/fm cassette or cd. What I did in my 
86,where the radio was in the overhead, I replaced in with an am/fm 
cassette and the bought a personal cd player and I use a cassette 
adapter to play the cd through the radio. I installed a 12 volt 
cigar light plug to plug the cd player in. This works real well. I
