[A/S] Transmissions

I'm guessing that most listees have automatic transmissions in their tow vehicles, since 
my previous post elicited very little response re:manual vs auto.  So what can you share 
about transmission benefits, problems, repairs, when towing your/our A/Ss?  
 
I've heard that prior year Dodges had some plastic components that could/did melt in high 
temp situations.  Is that the case now?
 
And an earlier issue of Trailer Life compared several auto trans gear ratios, concluding 
that Ford had "better" forward ratios but Dodge was  better (higher) in reverse.  I don't 
remember GMC/Chevy data for the allison trans.
