There have been autos in semis for at least 50 years now. In 1954 GMC 
offered optional automatics in all their models up to and including the 
Semi tractors.

And yes they were real Semi tractors. The big trucks that year offered 
up to a 6-71 detroit diesel or a 503 cubic inch gasoline six cylinder.

One of the touted benifits was increaed gas milage by preventing drivers 
from over-revving the shift points.
