If you take some fine sand paper and brighten up the contacts that will help greatly.  
I have also run a new screw through the grounding part of the running lights into the 
trailer to make a better ground and that also helps greatly.  It will also help to 
clean off the contacts where the trailer plugs into the tow vehicle.  I usually spray 
those once or twice a year with electrical contact cleaner.
