We have been using Delorme products real-time in the tow vehicle since our 
spring 1997 Alaska trip, and I have driven over 100K miles with it since then.

I do all the planning and setup before pulling out in the morning or at a 
rest stop. While actually driving, it is no more difficult or time 
consuming than looking at the speedometer. My laptop is to my right front - 
the laptop screen is about where the center of the dash would be.

I keep my eye on two items - current position still on track (my "trail" on 
the map coincides with the route I have chosen) and how far until the next 
turn. There is a panel I can display which shows distance to the next turn 
constantly, and it updates as I drive.  As I get close to a turn, I pay 
closer attention

I don't use mine at night - screen is too bright. Since we don't travel at 
night unless it is an emergency, I have never had to develop a work-around 
for this.
