Tom,
I had my first lesson a few weeks ago when I pulled
both batteries out of the Classic for winter storage. 
I thought the same thing as you as I struggled to get
my hand into the box and have enough space to lift and
slide the batter out.

It would be neat to possibly fabricate some of that
slick plastic like movers use to slide things on
floors or carpets.  I have four of these pads and
things slide like they are on glass.  I figure if you
would wedge them under the battery, it wouldn't take
much for the slide (once you got the battery up and
over the lip).
