As A full timer I use Directv and the new Dual Drive Receiver/Tivo.
Records two at once or watch one while recording one.
Really great when two desired movies sports, etc. are on at the same time.

You do need the phone line at least once for the first set up.

However, after that, almost a year ago I've had No phone line no problem.

If you check your messages it say's you have not checked via phone for XXX 
days.

Other than that no problem..

If you want your drives updated you do need to connect to a phone line for 
a day
as they send data updates in the wee hours.

How do you down load to DVD???

Mine I believe only does it to a VCR???  I'd love to copy to DVD.
