My family experience once in the mid 60's was to drive straight through.
Leaving Grand Rapids Mi to Miss. After driving 22 hrs. and  trying to sleep 
a
little and get comfortable and eat.... not much fun.  I slept the first two
days we arrivied....
Now my style is ...It starts at the end of the driveway not when i get
there. I want to take it all in so I try to be ready as soon as possible.
