 I  am sorry , but this is not the proper method. The hitch height is 
19.5 ", to the top of the ball from the ground, with the tow vehicle 
loaded and before the trailer is placed on the hitch ball.  When you 
place the trailer on the ball and pull the load leveling bars up in 
place, the hitch height then should be no more then 19.5" which is 
what it was before the trailer was placed on the ball. If this is 
done this way your trailer and tow vehicle will be level.  If you 
have any doubts in this proceedure,I suggest contacting Airstream's
