I once had a problem with a furnace (in our '85 I think) that would
not stay lit if it would light at all.  Turned out to be a bad gas
pressure regulator.  They seem to go bad often.

You can make a water column gauge with some clear flexible
tubing formed into a U shape.  The water should displace 5 and
1/2 inches so that the total difference between from one side of
the U to the other is 11 inches.  That is the correct gas pressure
with at least one major device using gas.  In other words take
this reading with the water heater or oven burning.  Outside
temperature will effect the pressure a little but if it's less than
9 and 1/2 inches stuff stops working correctly.

If in dough have a qualified LP gas technician check it out.
A new regulator is about $40 and takes about 15 minutes
to change out.
