I found on my 25' Sovereign, the crude that had collected in the 
channels made the step harder and harder to get down. Using a gentle 
persuader (3# dead blow mallet) i got the step down, then got a mini 
wire brush in there and loosened up as much stuff as I could, blew the 
channels out with the air gun then went to work with my favorite spray 
lube. I use a product called Superlube, I like it because it can be
used for  many other things besides a lubricant. I've used it to dry out 
electrical  connections, as an anti corrosive, etc. I would stay  away 
from a grease down were the junk off to road can fly up and be 
encouraged to stick. Once you have the step freed up a once a month 
spray in the workings and you will have a step that operates like new.
