In the winter time, diesel fuel is reformulated to prevent "waxing" and
"jelling" in the cold weather.  This is essentially the solidifying (or
freezing ) of some of the components of the fuel which will clog the fuel
filter and injector nozzels.

Note, however, that the winter diesel fuel has a lower heat content per
gallon, so you will not get as good fuel mileage.

As I recall, the Duramax has a  fuel pre heater to prevent the fuel jelling
problem.  However, I don't know if this will allow you to run hot weather
formulated fuel in cold climates.  You probably could once the engine is
warm and running, but starting cold??

There are diesel fuel additives (readily available at truck stops) to
dissolve the jell (much like dry gas for water in the gasoline).
