My dogs ride in the truck and my two cats ride in the trailer. I don't crate 
them, but they don't try to run out when I open the door.  They do ride in the 
covered cat box, their own choosing.  Because of this I have to clean the cat 
box *before* I hook up as they go right in it when they know we are hitting 
the road.

As for letting them out, I *never* let them out. Too many dangers out 
there.... wild animals, dogs, cars, sick people etc....

I've been in campgrounds where people had been sitting for weeks hoping 
"Fluffy" would come back.... Fluffy won't.
