Forgot to answer the question.

It can be replaced.  

It can be done by one person, just make sure that you support the awning 
tube, and RELEASE THE TENSION ON SPRING IF ANY.

Zip Dee sent me complete instructions for accessing the spring, complete with 
new rivets to do the job.  They also recommended  having a priest stand by.
